Golden Eye in 16 Categories
31 October, 2005, Monday, p.14:
[MAGYAR HÍRLAP]

György Illés, János Tóth, László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond got a prize for their lifelong work.

This time the jury was not inspired by outstanding actor performance, brilliant script or direction. HSC (Hungarian Society of Cinematographers) and its 185 members rewarded exclusively the work of cinematographers at the Golden Eye Cinematographer Festival having taken place in Kiscelli Museum . The jury chose the best ones.

At the annual festival, which was held for the second time, there were 16 categories (see our tablet). One could enter the competition with such as an experimental film or a documentary made in 2004-2005, or also with a musical or a feature film, as well as with a TV series. This festival was founded last year in honour of György Illés (91), chairman of the HSC, who educated 95% of today's Hungarian cinematographers.

Legends Awards

'The cinematographers' education at the University of Theatre and Film Art started after WW2, at the beginning of 1950s. There was much to be made up then, so the university education tried to concentrate not exclusively on professional knowledge, but also on wide-range education and intelligence', says Emil Novák, idea-owner of the festival, about the origin of the well-known and well-acknowledged Hungarian cinematographers' school. According to him, there is a need for such a competition because thus the profession can face the new challenges of the new millennium, and the day-by-day changing and increasing information. The cinematographers' competition, of course, can attract not only the attention of the professionals, but also that of the wide public. There were many spectators at the film showing in the Urania National Movie-theatre in the middle of October. Most of them were interested in the university students' films, dramatised documentaries and nature films.

At the gala on Saturday night the jury gave out a new award established this year, the Legends Award. For their outstanding professional career György Illés, the school-establisher master and János Tóth, Vilmos Zsigmond, László Kovács, the famous followers were together awarded this prize. The cinematographer of the year was also named: Gergely Pohárnok got the prize for Hukkle and Black Brush ( Fekete kefe ).

Statues and Legends

The best university student's work was also awarded by one of the sponsors, Sparks Camera and Lighting Ltd., Hungarian representative of Panavision. Béla 'Richy' Romwalter, executive manager of Sparks told us Panavision offers the prize-winner the use of a $60 000-worth camera package for his first film. The HUF12-13 million-worth prize means that for 2-3 weeks the prize-winner will be able to use this professional camera package. Sculptor Ildikó Bakos made the Golden Eye prizes themselves. These statue-prizes represent the Muse holding the Golden Eye, the symbol of cinematographers. The elders of the profession, the Legends were also given a symbolic present: wooden beam pieces taken out of the lighting bridge of the former studio, at the Film Art University .
