Cinematographer of the Year: Gergely Pohárnok

Gergely Pohárnok was awarded (for among other films, Fekete Kefe/Black Brush and Hukkle) the prize 'Cinematographer of the Year' at the award-presenting gala of Golden Eye Cinematographer Festival on Saturday evening, in Budapest . Legend Lifetime Achievement Awards were for the first time presented here. Four cinematographers were given it: György Illés, János Tóth, László Kovács, Vilmos Zsigmond, both arriving in Hungary from the US for this occasion. This prize can be won by such cinematographers whose work has been for decades an example to follow and who contributed to the recognition of the work of Hungarian filmmakers all around the world.

Kossuth-prize holder György Illés, who will celebrate his 91st birthday next Wednesday, created such films as Ház a sziklák alatt/Cottage under the Cliffs, Pacsirta/Skylark, Szegény gazdagok/The Poor Rich and A Pál utcai fiúk/Pál Street Boys. Kossuth-prize holder János Tóth photographed Szerelem/Love, Macskajáték/Catgame and Egy erkölcsös éjszaka/A moral night. László Kovács was, for example, the cinematographer of Easy Rider, Mask and Ghostbusters.

Vilmos Zsigmond got the Oscar prize for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, directed by Steven Spielberg. Vilmos Zsigmond also photographed the Deer Hunter and Bánk bán. (The two cinematographers emigrated from Hungary together in 1956 with almost 10 000m long film copy in their bags.)

The Hungarian Society of Cinematographers (HSC) organised the Golden Eye Festival for the second time, at which there were 90 cinematographers' 121 film in competition. These films could enter 16 different categories.

In feature film category András Nagy ( A fény ösvényei/Paths of Light) was awarded , the p rize for the best student of the University of Theatre and Film Art went to Katalin Mészáros for her work, Laci. She also won the special prize of Panavision (producer of the most acknowledged film technique equipment) and Sparks Ltd. (exclusive representative of Panavision in Hungary), a 60 thousand-dollar worth of "equipment package with camera, lenses etc. for making her first feature film".

Dániel Garas ( Máassar Fiyyi - Fadt Shaker ) proved to be the best in the category of movie clips, in the category of dramatised documentary Sándor Várkonyi ( Álomturné/Dreamfilm) was awarded . A kékszakállú herceg vára/Castle of the Blue-bearded brought success to Tibor Nemes in the category of musical films. HSC members also acknowledged Gyapjas pille - Hernyók a pokolból/Worms from Hell by Szabolcs Mosonyi.

In the competition of entertainment programmes Megasztár/Megastar brought success for its cinematographer , Zsolt László. In the News category András Szobrász's Filmhíradó 51., in that of Public Culture Tamás Nemescsói's Jelenlét aranyban/Existence in Gold and among advertisements Zsolt Tóth's Törley were the winners.

Among TV films Péter Szatmári's A Nagy Könyv - 1984/The Great Book - 1984 won the category prize. In the category of experimental films Sándor Kardos's Résfilm/Gapfilm, among short features Tamás Keményffy Most látszom, most nem látszom/Now You Can See Me, Now You Can't, i n the category of documentaries Amari Kris by Francisco Gózon, among co-productional/international feature films Sorstalanság/Fateless by Gyula Pados were awarded by the jury.

For this year's festival HSC compiled a list of those 12 films that are considered to be outstanding, epoch-making cinematographic work within the Hungarian filmmaking.
