Gergely Pohárnok got the award of the cinematographer of the year - for his films, among others, Fekete Kefe/Black Brush and Hukkle - at the Golden Eye Festival on Saturday night, in Budapest .

The Legend Awards were first presented at the gala. Four creators were awarded: György Illés, János Tóth, László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond, these two both arriving home from the US for this occasion.

This award can be won by such a cinematographer whose work for decades was one to be followed and who contributed to the recognition and acknowledgement of the Hungarian cinematographers around the world.

Kossuth-prize holder György Illés, who will celebrate his 91st birthday next Wednesday, created such films as Ház a sziklák alatt/Cottage under the Cliffs, Pacsirta/Skylark, Szegény gazdagok/The Poor Rich and A Pál utcai fiúk/Pál Street Boys. Kossuth-prize holder János Tóth photographed Szerelem/Love, Macskajáték/Catgame and Egy erkölcsös éjszaka/A moral night.

László Kovács was, for example, the cinematographer of Easy Rider, Mask and Ghostbusters. Vilmos Zsigmond got the Oscar prize for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, directed by Steven Spielberg. Vilmos Zsigmond also photographed the Deer Hunter and Bánk bán. (The two cinematographers emmigrated from Hungary together in 1956 with almost 10 000m long film copy in their bags.)

The Hungarian Society of Cinematographers (HSC) organised the Golden Eye Festival for the second time, at which there were 90 cinematographers' 121 film in competition. These films could enter 16 different categories.
